Nature walk to Tymon Park with Éanna Ní Lamhna

April 30th, 2018 · No Comments

Today we went on a walk to Tymon Park with Éanna Ní Lamhna. We learned how male ducks have green heads & females have brown heads. We looked at different flowers and learned why daisies are called so; days eye, because they open their petals in day time and close them at night. We saw a rare flower called cowslip and learned how dandelions were used to make medicine. We also looked for insects in leaves on certain trees. We did this by holding an umbrella upside down & shook the leaves into it to see what insects fell out.

Soil Erosion Experiment

April 23rd, 2018 · Comments Off on Soil Erosion Experiment

In 4th class room 6 we have set up an experiment to see the effect that different situations have on soil. We have three plastic bottles which we cut open. We filled each with soil. One we left with just soil, the next we put bark, leaves and sticks on and the last one we planted flower plants in. We hung halves of other bottles underneath to measure how much water and soil flows off each. We have been watering each bottle with the same amount of water each day. Already we can see that the one with just soil is letting alot more water and soil through and the one that is planted is letting the least amount of water and soil through.

Eggs Experiment

April 23rd, 2018 · Comments Off on Eggs Experiment

In Room 6 we are looking at the effect of different drinks on egg shells. We put egg shells in water, orange cordial and coke. Egg shells are made from minerals just like our teeth.  These minerals will begin to dissolve if exposed to acid. Sugary drinks are high in acid. Already we can see the staining and erosion these drinks are causing to the egg shells compared to the water and control egg shell.
